Needlepoint is the art of creating beautiful designs with needle and thread on a canvas. The design is already printed onto a sturdy canvas, which you simply fill in stitch by stitch. No complicated patterns or years of experience are required: a needle, thread and canvas are all you need to get started.
For me, needlepoint is much more than a craft. It is a wonderful combination of creativity, color, texture, and tradition, but also a moment to slow down. The gentle, repetitive rhythm of stitching can be calming and meditative, making needlepoint a wonderful practice for relaxation, mindfulness, and mental wellbeing.
The magic doesn't have to end with the last stitch. A finished canvas can be transformed into a beautiful and functional keepsake—such as a box, clutch, folder, or tray.

NDLPT Basics Guide
Mesh Size (Canvas Holes)
Mesh size refers to how many holes are in 1 inch of canvas:
• Lower number (e.g., 13 mesh): larger holes, faster stitching, less detail, thicker thread.
• Higher number (e.g., 18 mesh): smaller holes, slower stitching, more detail, thinner thread.
• Beginners are often best starting with a lower mesh size.
Canvas Type
Mono canvas is the most common choice. It is durable and versatile, making it suitable for different stitches and techniques.
Needles
Use tapestry needles, which have a large eye and a blunt tip. Suggested sizes:
• 8–10 mesh → Size 16 needle
• 10–12 mesh → Size 18 needle
• 12–14 mesh → Size 20 needle
• 14–18 mesh → Size 22 needle
Common Terms
• LNS: Local Needlepoint Store — a place to buy supplies, get help, take classes, and often arrange finishing.
• WIP: Work In Progress — your current needlepoint project. You can have one or more WIPs.
Threads
Needlepoint threads come in many varieties, including silk, wool, cotton, and novelty threads such as metallic, velvet, sparkly, or fuzzy fibers. The best choice depends on the mesh size, design, and personal preference.
Thread Basics
• Skein: a packaged bundle of thread.
• Strand: a piece of thread cut from a skein.
• Ply: the number of strands twisted together to make a thread.
• Dye Lot: a specific batch of thread color. Using the same dye lot helps prevent subtle color differences.
Stitching Techniques
• Waste Knot: a method used to secure your thread when starting a project.
• Tent Stitches: the most basic and commonly used needlepoint stitches. Continental uses a medium amount of thread and coverage; basketweave uses the most thread and provides the most coverage. See below for instructions how to stitch these stitches.
Other Useful Terms
• Frogging: removing stitches when you make a mistake — rip it, rip it!
• Needleminder: a magnetic accessory used to hold your needle when you are not stitching. You can’t have enough of them!
Finishing Your Project
• Blocking: reshaping the canvas after stitching, as it can become slightly warped while you work. Professional finishers typically block the canvas before finishing.
• Finishing: transforming your stitched canvas into a finished piece such as an ornament, frame, keychain, tray, or another decorative or functional item.
• Self-Finishing: transforming your stitched canvas into a self-finished piece such as a cartonnage box or frame.
How to Needlepoint
A few stitches to get you started!
Basketweave Stitch
Worked in diagonal rows, the Basketweave Stitch is perfect for covering large areas of canvas and provides fuller coverage than other tent stitches.
Always stitch diagonally from bottom-left to top-right. Never secure thread tails on a diagonal; always run them horizontally or vertically.
This stitch forms a woven, interlocking grid on the back.
Continental Stitch
Worked in horizontal rows, Continental Stitch is ideal for smaller areas and offers medium coverage compared to the other tent stitches. This stitch is worked from right to left and snakes back and forth row by row.
It covers a single canvas intersection by moving diagonally from the lower-left to the upper-right. It creates neat rows of textured stitches on the front and thick diagonal rows on the back.
